About the Film Festival

Play the Fool International Short Film Festival for clowning on screen is based out of Amiskwaciwâskahikan, also known as Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Our short film festival is sister to our Play The Fool Live Theatre Festival, and welcomes interpretations of clowning from all corners of the world. International and local films are jury selected. Engaging, creative content is more important than slick production values.

The Play the Fool Short Film International Film Festival community has a mandate to support films by local artists within an international framework.

Failure is unimportant. It takes courage to make a fool of yourself.

Charlie Chaplin

Starting in November, you can submit our film through FilmFreeway using YouTube or Vimeo Film links of shorts (no trailers), 2 minutes (max) including credits. We’re very serious about the 2 minute maximum… NO EXCEPTIONS!

Films can be of any genre with a clown/physical comedy component; red nose, mask, dance comedy, bouffon, character pieces, comedy burlesque, drag, acrobatics, slapstick, puppetry, animation, or the undefinable.

Films are selected by a diverse, independent jury panel of experts with expertise in film and clowning. Official selections will be offered a screening fee.

  • Call for submissions opens November
  • Submission deadline: early March
  • Notification mid-March
  • Festival launch April 1st
  • Online link access for one year
