Play the Fool International Short Film Festival


Play the Fool International Short Film Festival for clowning on screen is in its second installment, based out of Edmonton, Canada, complements the Play The Fool Live Theatre Festival and welcomes interpretations of clowning from all corners of the world. International and local films are jury selected. Engaging, creative content is more important than slick production values.

The Play the Fool Short Film International Film Festival community has a mandate to support films by Edmonton/Amiskwaciwâskahikan-area artists within an international framework.

Failure is unimportant. It takes courage to make a fool of yourself.

Submissions are now open for the 2021 Film Festival – submission deadline is March 7, 2021. Selected films will be screened online at, beginning April 1, 2021.


Submit your film through FilmFreeway using YouTube or Vimeo Film links of shorts (no trailers), 2 minutes (max) including credits of any genre containing a clown/physical comedy component not limited to red nose, mask, dance comedy, bouffon, character pieces, comedy burlesque, drag, acrobatics, slapstick, puppetry, animation, or the undefinable. Films will be curated by an independent jury panel.


Official selections will be offered screening fees and awards in the following competitive categories and other jury mentions:

  • Golden Nose – Jury’s Choice
  • Fools Gold – Best Edmonton/Amiskwaciwâskahikan-area film
  • Red Nose – Best International film
